The power of the term
I fear, thanks in part to Blogthenticty, that our Horsefeathers blog is now garnering more attention than the restaurant it was designed to promote. Beginning with a PowerBlog Review (we’re #34) last fall, the past few months have been busy with numerous inquiries about our blog. Not about, “What’s the dinner special, tonight?” or “How do I get to your place?”, but “Please tell me about your blog.”
Truth is, we’re thrilled to have the publcity. And last week, when the San Fransico Chronicle included our restaurant in their feature about small business blogs, I was totally amazed. The fact, that the largest newspaper, in one of the world’s greatest restaurant cities, located just an ipod’s throw from Silicon Valley, chooses to write about our little restaurant up here in East Nowhere, New Hampshire, blows me away.
We’ve been written up in national trade glossies, including a feature in the May issue of Restaurant Business magazine. (Sorry, in some illogical bit of editorial genius, the story about blogs was not published on line.) In his new book, Shel Israel is using our blog as an example in a chapter titled, “Small companies -long reach”. And, our blog is now being pointed to by all kinds of odd and diverse places on the internet. So, why are we getting all this attention?
Of course, it’s the term “blog”. What Horsefeathers has is nothing more than a dynamic website. Dynamic, in that the content changes regularly. That’s it, nothing magical. The power, right now, is in the term. Everyone wants to know what “blog” means. And if we’re smart business people, we’ll all leverage the term for as long as it can benefit our businesses.
The real trick will be when to start calling our “blogs”by another name.

ben,
yes, a dynamic website is nothing new - what is new is including the reader more than before.
i, too, have used you as a positive example of the power of opening a conversation.
